Learners please be on your guard against un-licensed driving Instruction

The RSA is warning learner drivers paying for driving lessons that there are new laws which were introduced recently to regulate driving instructors in Ireland.

These Regulations guarantee the quality and skills of those teaching new drivers across the country. It is a crucial building block in our work to make the roads safer. The quality of driving instruction in Ireland impacts directly on road safety and it is essential for a credible driving instruction industry that every instructor meets a minimum standard in terms of his/her ability to deliver instruction.

Since 1st May 2009 it has become an offence for an Instructor to give driving instruction to a learner driver for hire or reward unless the instructor is on the RSA register of approved driving instructors (ADI). The RSA is advising learner drivers to take lessons from full permit holding ADIs as the best way to learn.

Make sure your Instructor has ‘Passed his / her test’ before taking any lessons with an them. You can check that your Instructor is qualified on our web site www.rsa.ie or www.rsa.ie . Also ask to see the Instructors permit on your first lesson; it must be displayed in the driving school vehicle during the course of the lesson and qualified Instructors will be pleased that you asked to see it – it will show that you are taking your driver training seriously.

If you witness un-licensed driving Instruction operating in your area please report it to either the Gardai Siochana at your local Garda Station or to adienforcement@rsa.ie or telephone 096.25007.

The Revenue commissioners are particularly keen to learn the details of un-licensed driving instructors and have set up a dedicated telephone service for reports of this nature, you may contact them on 01.6748949  All reports to this number will be taken by an officer of the revenue commissioners and will be treated in strict confidence - you do not have to give your own contact details.

Introduction

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is the regulatory body for driving instruction in Ireland. Driving instructors who meet the standard set by the RSA will become Approved Driving Instructors (ADI). An ADI Registrar based in the RSA heads up the unit responsible for the registration process. The ADI Registrar will set up a Stakeholders Forum to give a chance to those involved in driving instruction to have their say. See below for contact details.

RSA Issues Warning To Rogue Driving Instructors

The RSA is warning un-regulated driving instructors that they must comply with the new laws which were introduced recently to regulate driving instructors in Ireland or face enforcement action.

The provision of driving instruction for reward by unlicensed instructors carries a penalty upon conviction of a fine not exceeding €2,000 or at the discretion of the court, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both. Driving schools that also employ unlicensed driving instructors face similar penalties.

Since 1st May 2009 it has become an offence to give driving instruction to a learner driver for hire or reward unless the instructor is on the RSA register of approved driving instructors (ADI). The RSA is advising learner drivers to take lessons from full permit holding ADIs as the best way to learn.
